April 2018 MMPC Updates

April Meeting

A big thanks to Jim Leary fir his talk on macro photography at the April MMPC meeting. The notes from Jim’s talk are at http://mmphotoclub.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/NOTES-FOR-MACRO-WORKSHOP.pdf. As a follow-up, MMPC is planning a field trip to photograph wildflowers:

  • Harris Nature Center
  • 3998 Van Atta Rd, Okemos, MI (Note construction on Jolly Road)
  • Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 9:00 a.m.

Gallery Show Planning

The annual MMPC Gallery Show will be held again at the Riverview Church – Holt Venue. The dates will be November 17, 2018 – January 27, 2019. All MMPC members are encouraged to enter. The pricing to enter will be $10 for up to two images.

 

Fall Field Trip Planning

MMPC is planning an Upper Peninsula Waterfalls Weekend during the weekend of October 12, 2018. A trip to the Big Sable Lighthouse is being planned for January or February 2019.

 

Big Cookie

Congratulations to Randy Eberbach, Judge’s Choice and Arlene Allan People’s Choice for their March winning entries with the theme of Funny. Those images are now in the gallery at http://mmphotoclub.net/competitionbig-cookie/. The theme for the next Big Cookie competition in June 2018, is Buildings.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the MMPC Photo Challenge. A reminder that the April theme is Reflections. A gallery of the photos is on the web site at http://mmphotoclub.net/monthly-challenge/. If you do not use the Facebook group, send your entry by email to mmpclansing@gmail.com so that we can post it to the Facebook page. Discussion of the photos, beyond simply liking the picture, is encouraged. Members who post in all 12 months of 2018 will be entered for a gift card drawing at the end of the year. Upcoming themes for the photo challenge are:

  • April – reflections
  • May – symmetrical
  • June – shadows
  • July – Fairs and Festivals
  • August – stairs and steps

May Meeting

The May meeting of the Mid-Michigan Photography Club is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church, 510 W Ottawa St, Lansing, MI. Greg Smith will present on birding.

April Meeting

The April meeting of the Mid-Michigan Photography Club is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church, 510 W Ottawa St, Lansing, MI. This month we’ll have “James” Jim Leary doing a talk on macro photography. Jim’s background and expertise speaks for itself and it kind of runs in the family. So get ready to get up close and personal with your subject with tricks of the trade.

MMPC Photo Challenge

February MMPC Meeting Reminder

February Meeting

The February meeting of the Mid-Michigan Photography Club is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church, 510 W Ottawa St, Lansing, MI. The speaker Michael Wood from The Camera Shop will discuss What’s New in Photography for 2018.

Annual Lighthouse Crawl

The rescheduled Lighthouse Crawl will take place on Saturday February 3, 2018. Please respond to the Facebook event or reply to mmpclansing@gmail.com if you plan to participate.

We will meet behind the Cracker Barrel on the West side, in the parking lot of what was Gander Mountain at 6:00 am. The meeting location is South of Saginaw (M-43) off of Marketplace Blvd. Please dress weather appropriate. Things to bring, ice cleats or yaktraxs are a must, proper clothing, tripod, hiking stick, extra batteries. We will stop for lunch and dinner (if you prefer to bring a sack lunch you are welcome to). We will probably stay out for the magic hour and then go to dinner and head home.

Gallery Show

Thank you to all that participated in the Gallery Show. A reminder that take-down is scheduled from 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017.

Big Cookie

Thanks to all who entered the quarterly Big Cookie competition. Congratulations to Rich Wyllis, Judge’s Choice and Greg Baran People’s Choice for their winning entries with the theme of Smoke. The theme for the next Big Cookie competition in March 2018, is Funny. Starting in March 2018, the award will be a $10 gift card to the Camera Shop.

MMPC Monthly Photo Challenge

MMPC introduces a Monthly Photo Challenge beginning in January 2018. All MMPC members are encouraged to post a photo on the MMPC Facebook page in response to the monthly theme. Photos should be taken during the month, Themes for the first three months of 2018 are:

  • January – Winter Trees
  • February – Ice
  • March – Looking Out

Festival of Trees

Be sure to visit the MMPC tree at the Festival of Trees at the Turner-Dodge House through December 31, 2017.

Lighthouse Crawl

MMPC has scheduled a Lighthouse Crawl for Sunday January 28, 2018. The backup date, in case the weather does not cooperate, is the following Saturday, February 3, 2018. We will leave 6:00 a.m. Parking will be at the old Gander Mountain store on Marketplace Drive, behind Cracker Barrel.  Be sure to bring tripod and ice cleats and boots.

January Meeting – Free Photo Clinic

MMPC traditionally holds an open house and clinic on January to attract new members. All MMPC members are invited to attend on January 3, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. First Presbyterian Church, 510 W Ottawa St, Lansing, MI.

December Meeting

The December MMPC meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 6:30 p.m.  Note that an error regarding the date has been corrected on Facebook and the MMPC web site at www.mmphotoclub.com. We will meet at First Presbyterian Church, 510 W Ottawa St, Lansing, MI. This will be the annual holiday dinner. Main dishes will be provided. All members are invited to bring a dish to pass.  Please respond to the event on Facebook so that we can plan accordingly. A slideshow of MMPC members’ best pictures of 2017 will be running at the meeting. Send your 5 best pictures of 2017 to Ron St. Germain at daphotodude@aol.com. The December Big Cookie theme will be Smoke. An MMPC group photo will be taken at the December Meeting.

Remember that take-down is scheduled for Monday, December 18, 2017, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Dues

MMPC started collecting annual dues at the September meeting. Thanks to those that have paid for 2017-18. MMPC dues run from September through August of each year.  If you haven’t paid yet for 2017-18, your membership has expired. In order to attend future MMPC functions and meetings and remain on the MMPC Facebook page, dues must be paid by December 13, 2017.

A reminder for the MMPC Gallery Show.

Drop-off and Setup is tomorrow, Monday, October 23, 5:00-6:00 pm, at the Riverview Church. (Enter through Door 3, which is closest to Willoughby on the circle drive.) The address is 3585 E Willoughby Rd, Holt, MI 48842

All MMPC members are encouraged to attend the Gallery Show Reception which will be held Friday, October 27, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, at the Riverview Church.
