November 2024 MMPC Meeting

The November MMPC meeting will be held on Wednesday November 6, 2024, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church 510 W. Ottawa St. Lansing, MI 49833. This month we will be having a creative photography exercise where you document your day by capturing 6 different photos, taken approximately one hour apart, each representing a different moment or aspect of your day. It’s a great way to practice storytelling through photography and can be done using any camera.

Steps to Participate in the Challenge:

1. Set a Day: Pick a day where you plan to be engaged in diverse activities or settings, so you can capture a variety of subjects.
2. Capture Moments: Over the course of the day, take 6 different photos. Aim for one photo every hour. You can take more than one photo each our. Choose the one that you think is the best from each hour. The goal is to have 6 different photos taken at 6 different times.
3. Think About Variety: Try to include different perspectives, lighting conditions, and subjects. Consider capturing:
   • Morning routines (e.g., breakfast or morning light).
   • A landscape or urban shot.
   • Close-up details (like objects or textures).
   • Portraits of people or pets.
   • Action shots (e.g., walking, riding in a car, working).
   • Evening or night shots with different lighting.
   • Anything that you can imagine to photograph.
4. Plan or Be Spontaneous: You can either plan your shots ahead of time (thinking about the times and subjects) or be more spontaneous and capture things as they come.
5. Reflect Your Day: When you look back on the 6 photos, they should tell a cohesive story of your day. This might be a personal reflection or something that others can relate to when viewing your images.
6. Share Your Photos: Bring your photos on a flash drive to our November meeting. We will give you the opportunity to talk about your day and the photos that you shared. This is optional and not mandatory.

MMPC Board Elections

A discussion of the Mid-Michigan Photography Club officers was held at the meeting on October 3, 2024.

• Lenny Robinson will continue to serve as President until candidates are identified and elected by the membership.
• Pam Albright has agreed to be nominated as Treasurer
• Julie Johnston has agreed to be nominated as Secretary
• Daryll Smith was nominated and has agreed to serve as a member at large.

Big Cookie

Congratulations to Sunny Nayak Peoples Choice and Glenn S. Dunn Judges Choice for the September 2024 Big Cookie friendly photo competition with the theme Carnivals, Festivals, and Fairs. The theme for the next big cookie is “Action.” Members are encouraged to bring a digital image for the Big Cookie competition at the December 2024 meeting.

MMPC Annual Dues

The Mid-Michigan Photography Club collects dues annually, for the year beginning in September. The cost of being a club member will be $25 for the 2024-25 year. If you need to pay MMPC dues, send payments to:  Mid-Michigan Photography Club, PO Box 10045, Lansing, MI 48901.

Silver Bells in the City

MMPC members will gather to photograph the Silver Bells Electric Light Parade on Friday November 22, 2024. We will meet at the corner of Michigan and Grand in downtown Lansing at 5:30 p.m. The photographic challenge is to capture the lighting on vehicles and on members of the marching bands. The event concludes with Fireworks and a Drone Show.

1225 North Pole Express Field Trip – Saturday December 7, 2024

MMPC will sponsor a field trip to photograph the North Pole Express on Saturday, December 7, 2024. We will meet at the Burger King near the Perry exit on I-69 at 8:30 a.m. This meeting time will allow for photography of the train before it leaves Owosso.

April MMPC Meeting – April 3, 2024

To provide all MMPC members the opportunity to see the images in the 2023 MMPC Gallery Show, we will hold the April MMPC meeting as a reception for the Gallery Show.  The April MMPC meeting will be held on Wednesday April 3, 2024, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Riverview Church – Holt Venue, 3585 E Willoughby Rd, Holt, MI. The meeting and reception will provide MMPC members the opportunity to view the photographs on display in the Gallery Show and to interact with photographers whose work is shown. Please invite family members and others who may be interested in your images and or the images shown by the club members. Guests are encouraged to attend the event. Participants will gather at Gravity Smokehouse after the reception and meeting.

Gallery Show Planning

The pricing will be $10 for up to three images. All prints must be matted, framed, and ready to hang (with wire on the back of the frame). The maximum outside dimensions are 28 X 32 inches. Minimum print size is 8 X 10 inches. Members may offer their prints for sale, or they may choose to have it on display only. There will be two forms that must be submitted to participate. There is the Riverview Church Artists’ Agreement, and the Application for MMPC’s Riverview Gallery Show.

Lansing Orchid Show

The Greater Lansing Orchid Society Show and Sale is an annual event held the last weekend of February at the MSU Plant and Soil Sciences Building. They hold Photo Hour from 9-11 am on Sunday, February 25. The use of tripods is allowed during this time. Backgrounds have been challenging in the past. Many displays had black backgrounds in 2023. This is a fun event. All MMPC photographers are encouraged to participate.

Setup – Tuesday, March 12, 2024 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Take-Down – Tuesday, April 23, 2024 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.

The club’s April 2024 meeting will be a Gallery Show Reception at Riverview Church – Holt Venue.

Lansing Orchid Show

The Greater Lansing Orchid Society Show and Sale is an annual event held the last weekend of February at the MSU Plant and Soil Sciences Building. They hold Photo Hour from 9-11 am on Sunday, February 25. The use of tripods is allowed during this time. Backgrounds have been challenging in the past. Many displays had black backgrounds in 2023. This is a fun event. All MMPC photographers are encouraged to participate.

Big Cookie

Congratulations to the winners of the October Big Cookie (Purple): Glenn Dunn for People’s Choice and for Judges’ Choice. The judges were John Stine and Phil Babcock. The theme for next big cookie is “In the Style of a Master Photographer.” Pick a famous or “master photographer” from the list and create an image of your own that emulates the style of the photographer that you have chosen. Your image need not be of the same subject matter or object displayed in your “master’s” image, but the style of your image should be similar. For instance, if your “master” is known for the use of highly saturated colors, your image should have highly saturated colors. If your “master” is known for moody or misty black and white images, your image should also be moody or misty and in black and white. If your “master” is known for painterly still-life images, yours should also meet that standard. Enjoy the challenge. Bring to the February 2024 meeting a copy of the “master’s” image that inspired you and the image that you have created in that style. MMPC clothing items are available to order. You can specify a hoodie as a pullover or zip-up or you can order a t-shirt. You can bring your order form to an MMPC meeting or you can send your order form to the address on the form. Delivery will be at a future MMPC meeting.

MMPC Monthly Photo Challenge

Thanks to all who have contributed to the MMPC Photo Challenge. The January theme is Toys. It is great to see the submissions on the Facebook page. If you do not use the Facebook group, send your entry by email to mmpclansing@gmail.com so that we can post it to the Facebook page.
